Economic Responsibility

  • Under certain circumstances, leather has the potential to be regarded as sustainable. There are a few factors that support this claim:

    1. The longevity of leather products, such as shoes, bags, and furniture, is a notable advantage as they are highly durable and can withstand the test of time. This characteristic reduces the necessity for frequent replacements, resulting in long-term cost savings and a reduced environmental impact.

    2. Biodegradability: Leather, being a natural material, has the ability to break down and decompose naturally over time. This is in contrast to synthetic materials, which tend to persist in landfills without undergoing significant degradation.

    3. Byproducts: Leather is commonly derived from the meat industry as a byproduct, serving to optimise animal utilisation and reduce waste.

    4. The production of leather involves utilising animal hides, which has the potential to be a renewable resource if it is managed in a responsible manner.

    • The sustainability of leather is influenced by several factors, with the tanning process being a significant determinant.

    • The use of chemicals in traditional tanning methods can have negative impacts on the environment. However, it is worth noting that there are alternative tanning techniques that are more environmentally friendly.

    • Moreover, the presence of ethical concerns regarding animal welfare has the potential to impact the long-term viability of leather production. In order to enhance the sustainability of leather, it is crucial to take into account factors such as the origin of the material, the methods used in its production, and the appropriate disposal methods at the end of its life cycle.

  • BBK demonstrates a strong commitment to conducting research and development in the area of sustainable products, processes, and technologies. Approximately 50% of our research and development initiatives are motivated by ecological and social considerations, alongside technical and economic aspects. Our organisation actively collaborates with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure their needs are effectively incorporated into our sustainability objectives. The utilisation of this approach allows us to develop comprehensive solutions for our leather products, taking into account every stage of their life cycle. After conducting successful tests, we implement these solutions gradually at our various sites.

Environmental Responsibility

  • Incorporating ZDHC chemicals into production processes helps us to align with global sustainability and safety standards.

  • Wastewater undergoes recycling and reuse through the implementation of a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) process, as well as the application of biological treatment methods to treat sewage water prior to its discharge. This treated wastewater is subsequently utilised as a form of "fertiliser." Wastes are systematically sorted and subsequently subjected to recycling and reutilization processes.

  • The implementation of energy-efficient equipment and the setting up of energy monitoring systems are being pursued with the objective of achieving a fully sustainable and environmentally friendly operation by the end of 2024.
